Valentines Day is the one day a year in which couples have the excuse to revel in each other’s love and celebrate their relationship. Quiz: How much do you really know about Valentine’s Day? However this annual recognition of love can bring a lot of pressure when it comes to buying the right gift, writing the perfect card and arranging the most romantic Valentine’s date possible – and quite often things can go wrong. I spoke with three couples who each ran into trouble when celebrating their supposedly perfect Valentine’s Days and here are their stories. Adam and Louisa During my final year at university I lived in a shared house with a group of my friends, one of whom happened to be my girlfriend. It was our first Valentine’s Day together but without much money and with our minds constantly focused on our uni work we both agreed that we wanted to do something low key. The original plan was to go out for a nice meal in the city but our housemates agreed to go out for the night and give us space – it couldn’t have been more perfect, a romantic night in with just the two of us. How could such a simple plan go so wrong? (Picture: Ella By worth) The week leading up to Valentine’s Day was perhaps one of the busiest of my life, I was working part-time and when I wasn’t working I was studying non-stop. To put it simply Valentine’s Day was not on the top of my priority list. My plan of executing a perfect romantic meal for two completely slipped my mind and it wasn’t until around 4pm during my shift at work that I realised the big day had arrived. I couldn’t believe that I was one of those terrible boyfriends who actually forgot Valentine’s Day. It’s something you hear about but naturally assume you’ll never have to live through – and it was terrifying. I immediately began hatching a plan to make a quick dash to the nearest supermarket to buy all the Valentine’s essentials.
As soon as I finished work I ran like the wind to the nearest shop to pick up flowers. But before I even began scanning what was left on the shelves I locked eyes with the only other person in the aisle – my girlfriend. We immediately burst out laughing when we realised we were guilty of the same crime. Although this wasn’t even close to what we had planned, in the end it made our first Valentine’s Day more memorable than it perhaps would’ve been if everything had gone according to plan.
